Who's Gonna Call On Sunday Morning?

So this one has an interesting story behind the story. Ive been thinking of this story for about 2 months but Ive held off because of some unfortunate events.
The other night I was bored, and my friend was writing a story so he was distracted so I decided to go back to it.
Here's the result:

Paperthin Hymn

"Mrs. Neeves?" The young doctor walked up to Katherine Neeves. Katherine noticed that she looked worried.

"Is everything alright, doctor..." She looked down at the doctor’s nametag. Anna Green. "Doctor Green?"

"I'm afraid he’s slipping away." Katherine nearly dropped her coffee. She turned and nearly ran into her husband Richard's room.

She got to the doorway and stopped. He just looked so frail in the immediate care unit. He had been born in that hospital. His mother had told her all about it the day they got married. Their daughter, Michelle had been born there too. Katherine quickly put that thought out of her head. It wasn’t a good thing to be thinking of now.

“Rich, honey…” Katherine slowly entered the room.

“Kathy!” Richard tried to sit up in his bed but was held back by all the wires.

“Don’t exert yourself, I’m coming.” Katherine forced herself to sit by her husbands’ bedside, even though every nerve and muscle in her body was tensing to run.

“Kathy, darling, I saw the most amazing thing last night.” Richard said. Katherine noticed that he had a glow in his eyes that she hadn’t seen in years. Not since Michelle…

“What happened Rich?” Katherine asked, mildly interested.

“I saw an angel.” Richard said, no doubt or joke in his voice. “I was falling asleep last night, and this shadow came in. Most of the nurses were getting coffee I suppose. She kneeled down next to the bed, dressed all in blues and greens with a white coat. Hiding her wings I suppose. So like I said she was kneeling down next to the bed and my God she was beautiful. Long blond hair tied up probably so it didn’t go everywhere on her way down. She looked just like you did when we were younger. Why would she visit me? I guess it’s a sign.” He paused for a minute lost in thought. Katherine could barely believe what she was hearing. He continued:

“But yes, my story. Anyways she was next to the bed and she took my hand and told me she loved me. She said she was sorry. I wiped her eyes and asked her ‘why are you so sad? You’ve done nothing wrong.’ She didn’t believe me. She kept saying ‘I’m so sorry.’ I didn’t want to see the angel cry- Kathy are you okay?” Richard stopped suddenly and looked at his wife of 45 years. “Kathy?”

“I’m okay Rich. Finish your story darling.” Katherine said wiping her eyes. She knew who the angel was.

“Okay- if you’re sure…” He continued his story. “The angel slowly stopped crying. I couldn’t help but wonder where the nurses were, I wondered if it was a dream. Then suddenly the angel tugged at one of my wires.” He cringed. “Then I knew I was awake. The angel started again ‘I’m sorry!’ she gasped putting the IV back in carefully. ‘I’m always making these little mistakes.’ She took my hand again. And she prayed. She asked God for forgiveness for the both of us and asked Jesus to take me home painless. She asked Him to protect my soul. I sat there dumbfounded. Darling, when I go home can we start going to that little Church on the corner of First and Ocean?”

Richard looked at Katherine with these eyes. The glow in them just killed her. She knew then that he wasn’t coming home. “Of course Rich. I would like that. “Is that the end of your story?” Katherine wanted to find Dr. Green and ask her about this “angel”

“No, no. I’ll continue.” Richard said smiling. “Its almost over. The angel finished her prayer by thanking God for the years we had together. She must be my guardian angel. Wow. I have a guardian angel. Isn’t that amazing darling?” He didn’t wait for her answer. “Well after that she leaned over me and kissed my cheek. She said she would see me soon. I didn’t want her to go. All of a sudden I heard a noise in the nurses station. Must have been the nurse that night. The angel suddenly got up and squeezed my hand. She told me she loved me and walked out of the room. I swear Kathy. She disappeared in the light of the hallway. She must be an angel. Do you think God sent her to remind me that He’s looking out for me?”

“I-I have to go talk to Dr. Green.” Katherine practically ran out of the room wiping a steady stream of tears from her eyes.

Katherine ran into Anna Green right out side the door. “Is everything alright Mrs. Neeves?” Dr. Green asked.

“I have a couple questions for you. Is that okay?” Katherine asked.

“Of course, lets go to my office.” Anna answered

“Okay. Do you know a doctor Michelle Daniels?” Katherine asked.

“Yes I do, but I haven’t heard from her in a long time. Did you know her?” Anna looked slightly sad thinking of her lost friend.

“Yes, I did.” Katherine said, tears coming stronger then ever. “She is my estranged daughter. Her father and I did not approve of what she wanted to do with her life. She wanted to be an actress; we wanted her to be a doctor. She had an interest in science, and medicine. After high school she ran away from home. I haven’t heard from her since. My sister told me she married a “wonderful man” named James Daniels. And they have children.” Katherine laughed a sarcastic laugh. “I do not even know my own grandchildren. Was she a doctor here?”

“Yes she was. On this floor actually, I think she might still work here part time, but I am only on, during the weekends. I miss her.” Anna looked off sort of into the distance.

“Okay. That’s enough questions I guess.” Katherine still had a lot of questions but none could be answered.

Suddenly Anna’s beeper went off. “Oh my… It’s Mr. Neeves. He is crashing.” Anna and Katherine ran in the direction of Richard’s room.

They caught the last few seconds. It was peaceful at least. His last words to Katherine were: “My angel. Don’t cry. You have nothing to cry over…”

Katherine looked out the window of his room, into the hallway when it was over. What she saw she would never forget. She saw her husband’s angel, the splitting image of herself 45 years ago. Her daughter Michelle. Dressed in blue/green scrubs with a white lab coat. Long blonde hair tied back. Crying her eyes out, holding her father’s hand. Only it wasn’t her father, or at least not her father who was lying in the bed. It was Richard the way he was when Katherine had met him young and strong.

He looked her straight in the eyes and mouthed, “I love you. Forever and always.” Then they disappeared.
